There is no doubt that this little hamlet in Roseland is a
place of charm, of peace and tranquility and of warmth. In the height of summer,
of course it can become quite busy for such a small place, but most of the
activity takes place on the shoreline where there are tidal beaches and
anchorage for boats. Wandering along the coast toward St. Mawes or around the
creek and churchyard, though, is highly recommended.
The Church here has been described as the most beautiful in England, but that
may be more to do with its setting, than the actual building. The location on
the waters edge and surrounded by subtropical plants, the whole tucked into a
corner of a creek, is indeed extremely attractive. There is also a well in the
churchyard, but I am informed that it is not the ancient 'Holy Well'; that one
lies outside the lower lychgate beside the path and is actually pre-Christian in
origin.
