Cornwall may be one of the least known Counties for regular fresh water angling, and yet paradoxically Newquay is recognized as one of the most popular holiday resorts in the United Kingdom. It has long been considered that Newquay, by virtue of its position on the north coast is the ideal centre for touring around the County. By the same token, Newquay is also the ideal location for dedicated anglers to fish the numerous lakes and rivers that are literally within a few miles. It may not be generally known that there is no close season in Cornwall, fishing is permitted 52 weeks of the year. Couple this with fairly mild winters, lakes that do not freeze over, and the sport can be enjoyed all year round. What better than a few days in this milder winter climate, three rods in the lake, a flask of hot tea and the prospect of a 20lb+ Carp on the end of one of the lines.

Within ten minutes drive from the centre of Newquay there are six excellent, well stocked lakes in picturesque surroundings, and within forty minutes there are several more, both coarse and fly, and several rivers. These include Porth, Whitecross (just off the A392 (both White Acres and Oakside), Cubert, Nr Newquay (Gwinear), Nr Perranporth (Bolingey) and at Goonhavern (Rosewater). Just a little further away is the very popular site of Lake View near Bodmin.

The fly fishermen are not forgotten with fishing to be found on the Camel which stretches from the North West edge of Bodmin Moor past Camelford to its estuary at Wadebridge. The run of salmon tends to be late with some of the best fishing in November and December. Sea trout in Summer, and also moorland brown trout. The other nearest river is the Fowey which rises near the highest point of Bodmin Moor from which it flows south then turns to the west, and finally south again through Lostwithiel to its long estuary. This is another late salmon river with good sea trout fishing as well. Several other rivers are available also but at some distance away.

Stillwater trout fishing is available at numerous sites with the nearest ones being at Cubert near Newquay, Bodmin, Camelford, Falmouth, Hayle, Redruth, St Austell and Truro.

Fly fishermen are reminded that this branch of the sport is seasonal, even in Cornwall, and that it is necessary to have a current rod licence.

To consider but one lake - Porth - a superb location of 40 acres of water, less than ten minutes away, we quote from Peninsula Coarse Fisheries (a division of South West Water plc) Angling Guide: "This fishery consistently produces the best fishing in Devon and Cornwall, with match weights of 111lb of bream. Bags of 130lb plus have been caught by pleasure anglers. Best bream 9lb 2oz, best tench 9lb 12oz. Rudd to 3lb, roach 1¼ plus. Mixed bags of roach, rudd and skimmers to 60lb".

Add to this the opportunity to sea fish as well, it has to be the answer to any anglers dreams. With the extensive coastline on both North and South coasts of Cornwall, the opportunities for sea fishing are endless and if one is prone to seasickness much sport can be had from casting your line from the headland or even from the shoreline.
